1. Clean Up Your Digital and Social Media
Your social media accounts should reflect the professional educator you aim to be. Keep personal accounts private and ensure your professional presence is public and positive. Some tips when it comes to tidying up your social media account:
Check Privacy Settings: Review your personal accounts to ensure they are set to private. Make any professional accounts public - you want your positive professional presence to shine through.
Review Followers & Following: Look at who you are following and who is following you. Remove any fake accounts or accounts that don't align with you.
Remove Inactive Accounts & Posts: If you no longer use a platform, consider deactivating it. For example, I deleted my X account in December because it was no longer serving me as a place for professional and positive discourse.
Google Yourself: Search for your full name to see what appears. If anything unprofessional shows up, take steps to remove or address it.
Update Your Bio & Profile Photo: Refresh your social media bios and select a professional, friendly profile picture.
2. Refresh Your LinkedIn Profile & Resume
LinkedIn is a powerful tool for networking and job searching. Give it a little spring cleaning by:
Updating Your Headline: Use keywords like “Aspiring Educator” or “Passionate Future Teacher.”
Refreshing Your Profile Picture: Choose a clear, professional image.
Adding New Experiences: Include recent volunteer work, leadership roles, and field observations.
Listing Certifications: Add any credentials you’ve earned, such as Google Certified Educator, Microsoft Educator, or Apple Certified Teacher.
Posting a Semester Recap: Share a post highlighting your achievements and experiences from this semester.
3. Polish Your Digital Portfolio
Your digital portfolio is your professional showcase. Keep it updated by:
Adding New Work Samples: Upload updated lesson plans, reflections, fieldwork, and journal entries.
Checking Links: Ensure that all embedded content and external links are working.
Reviewing Navigation: Open your portfolio in incognito mode to see how it appears to others. This can help you find any dead links or content that isn't embedded properly.
4. Organize Your Digital Files
A cluttered digital space can slow you down. Get organized by:
Creating a Folder System: Organize files by semester, course, or project.
Cleaning Your Downloads Folder: Delete unnecessary files and store important ones properly.
Backing Up Your Content: Make sure that lesson plans, assessments, and reflections are saved in the cloud.
5. Reflect on Your Goals
Take a moment to evaluate your professional and academic goals:
Review Goals from the Beginning of the Semester: Determine how you are progressing.
Adjust & Set New Goals: Plan for continued growth in the final months of the semester.
Document Your Achievements: Keep a record of your progress to showcase later.
By taking these five simple steps, you can make sure that your digital presence is polished, professional, and ready for future opportunities. If you have questions or thoughts, feel free to reach out, I’d love to hear how your spring cleaning is going!
