Welcome, EduMagicians! We're thrilled to have you join us for another engaging conversation on the EduMagic Podcast. Today, we're diving into an amazing initiative that's profoundly influencing the future of education: the Call Me MISTER program. Dr. Sam Fecich recently had a conversation with Byron Morgan, the Director of the Call Me MISTER program and the Outreach and Engagement Coordinator at Longwood University, about how this program is molding the next generation of male educators.

What is the Call Me MISTER Program?

Founded in 2000 at Clemson University, the Call Me MISTER (Mentors Instructing Students Towards Effective Role Modeling) program is designed to support and prepare male teachers, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, for the classroom. The program focuses on personal growth, professional development, and leadership, ensuring that its participants are well-equipped to inspire and educate future generations.

Byron Morgan’s Journey in Education

Byron’s journey with Call Me MISTER began in 2006 when he attended their Summer Institute. This experience introduced him to the world of teaching and set him on a path that would ultimately lead to a decade-long career as a pre-K teacher. The developmental milestones he witnessed in young children ignited his passion for early childhood education, and his dedication to fostering a love for learning has remained steadfast.

Now, as the director of the Call Me MISTER program at Longwood University, Byron is focused on mentoring and preparing future male educators for the realities of the classroom. His story exemplifies the power of mentorship and the impact that dedicated teachers can have on shaping young minds.

How the Call Me MISTER Program Supports Future Educators

The Call Me MISTER program offers a wealth of resources and support to its participants, including:

  • Personal Development: Coaching sessions and bonding activities that focus on building confidence, leadership skills, and resilience.

  • Professional Networking: Opportunities to connect with superintendents, principals, and HR directors for career guidance and job placement.

  • Real-World Experience: Outreach initiatives in K-12 schools, community engagement, and hands-on teaching experiences that prepare participants for the classroom.

  • National Reach: With cohorts in states such as Colorado, Florida, Virginia, and Louisiana, Call Me MISTER is expanding its impact nationwide.

The Impact of the Call Me MISTER Program

This event brings high school students to campus for an immersive experience, exposing them to the world of education and mentorship. Additionally, the annual Leadership Institute at Clemson University provides participants with the opportunity to engage with speakers and educators from across the country, further fueling their passion for teaching.

Byron Morgan’s story, along with the continued success of the Call Me MISTER program, highlights the importance of investing in the next generation of teachers.
