A Journey to Flipping the Classroom E161 Featuring Mandy Rice

Updated: Jun 7, 2022

In this episode, we talk about flipped learning with Mandy Rice from the sustainable teacher show. Before our discussion today, Mandy discusses her journey into education and how teachers can make a difference in students' lives. We will discuss the what, why, and how of flipped learning. We also share some best practices when it comes to flipped learning. One of my favorites is to start small. We end our conversation with some of our must-have educational technology tools to help get you started with flipping your lessons.

What is flipped learning?

In a traditional classroom, the teacher is the one delivering content. It is typically structured as "I do," "You do," and "we do." The "you do" part of the lesson is completed as homework. However, in a flipped classroom, the more challenging parts of learning are done in the classroom with the teacher; this is the "you do" part. For example, they are doing their homework and applications and learning content on their own at home.

Why flipped learning?

She wanted to establish a learning culture in the classroom. Mandy's goal was to spend more time with students in the classroom. Some benefits of flipped learning

  • Teachers can make their classrooms more accessible to their students with flipped learning.

  • This feature allows teachers to duplicate themselves and let students work through content at their own pace.

  • Reach students at their own pace of learning or reach them where they are in their learning progression.

  • Accommodate and change instruction for students

Best practice for flipped learning

  • Try to flip one unit at a time, not a lesson at a time

  • You don't have to flip all the things. It means you don't have to flip every lesson at once. Flip your lessons and units a little at a time.

  • Student teaching is a great place to start when it comes to flipping.

  • Before flipping a lesson, consider what your students have access to at home and school (online, hardware, software, Wi-Fi, etc.).

Recommended Educational technology tools

We recommend the following educational technology tools to get started with flipped learning

  • Camtasia

  • screencastify

  • loom

  • Edpuzzle

  • nearpod (use code EduMagic for 30 days of Gold free)

  • Google forms

  • Powerpoint or Google slides - use SlidesMania or Slides Carnival to add some sprinkles to your presentation.
